About Us

Empowering Adults. Changing Lives. One Word At A Time.

Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle (LVEP) helps adults improve their basic literacy skills in reading, writing, and numeracy, and, for community members whose first language is not English, provides English language instruction and citizenship preparation.

For more than 40 years, LVEP has offered tutoring in basic literacy and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) in both one-on-one and small-group environments, based on availability. Services are provided free of charge by volunteer tutors, who are trained by LVEP.

Our Programs

Transforming Lives
Through The Power Of Learning

Adult Basic Education

Adult Education programs in the Eastern Panhandle support adults 17+ without a high school diploma. LVEP volunteers assist with GED prep through tutoring, classroom support, and online learning help.

Basic Literacy

LVEP’s basic literacy learners are English-speaking adults who struggle with reading and writing. They receive personalized one-on-one tutoring across all Eastern Panhandle counties.

Citizenship

LVEP offers weekly in-person and Zoom classes to help students prepare for U.S. citizenship. Teachers guide them through tests, forms, interviews, and offer extra resources as needed.

ESOL

LVEP’s English language learners are placed in classes based on their skill level. Teachers support students in reading, speaking, writing, and listening for well-rounded learning.
