Where Do I Start?
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we send you out prepared. All LVEP tutors are trained and certified by ProLiteracy America standards.
We offer in-person training and provide ongoing mentoring support with Adult Education staff. Your enrollment in ProLiteracy offers you the opportunity to enhance your tutoring skills through free online training.
FAQ’s for Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle
I am ready to be a volunteer tutor. What training do I need?
All volunteers are required to complete two modules focused on adult learning through ProLiteracy.org. This training is free of charge and accessed after an interview with an LVEP volunteer coordinator.
I finished the training and passed the tests. What is next?
After you have passed the training and printed out your certificates, you will contact the volunteer coordinator, complete enrollment paperwork, and meet with a staff member to make a tutoring assignment. Your volunteer coordinator will facilitate this transition.
How many hours a week are required and where do I meet my student(s)?
Most volunteers commit to 2-3 hours a week, some tutors do more and some do less. The team works with your schedule to make a good match. Most services are provided at a WV Adult Learning Center, but there are options to meet students in community settings, such as libraries, local shops, centers, etc. Some teams prefer to access Zoom meetings to connect with their students. Tutoring sessions ALWAYS occur in a public place, never in individual homes.
What types of tutoring/teaching opportunities are available?
During your initial interview with the volunteer coordinator you were able to describe your strengths and preferences. LVEP helps support adults with Low Literacy in reading and math, English Language Learners, adults seeking their GED, and adults seeking assistance completing Citizenship requirements. Additional opportunities may also be available in administrative, recruitment, and public awareness support to LVEP.
Are there tutoring materials available for me and my student(s)?
Written materials are available in all of the above areas free of charge to student and tutor. The staff at the WV Adult Learning site can guide you as to appropriate workbooks and initial goals. Some students also work independently online under supervision of the WV Adult Education staff.
What if I need additional materials? How do I order and get reimbursed?
The following link should be used to request materials: https://bit.ly/lvep_request. Once approved, LVEP will purchase the materials. If you are making an approved purchase with your own funds, use the following link for reimbursement: https://bit.ly/lvep_reimbursement.
I need more help and support with my student(s). Where do I go?
You can start with the staff member who made the assignment or consult with another experienced volunteer. In addition, you can access resources on ProLiteracy. There are many excellent topics that may be of help. If you are interested in more formal in-service training, send a message to info@lvep-wv.org and a staff member will contact you.
Why do I need to report my volunteer hours every month?
LVEP uses a variety of data points to access grants and other funding sources. Your monthly reporting will help us with this goal. In addition, the mileage you report, while not for reimbursement purposes, may be helpful to you for tax purposes. You can print out this information each month for your records.
What is the difference between LVEP and WV Adult Education?
As a volunteer with LVEP, you provide essential tutoring services to some students who are enrolled in WV Adult Education programs. Some of these students are seeking GED certificates and some are enrolled in ESOL programs. LVEP provides tutoring services to these students, as needed, in addition to the support they provide to adults with Low Literacy, adults in the community needing English instruction, and adults seeking Citizenship.
