English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle (LVEP) offers ESL/ESOL classes to adults seeking to improve their English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Literacy Help

Our classes are on four levels:

All students who register for language classes are tested for proper placement in one of the four levels noted below. Once the placement has been determined, the students are assigned to a class and are informed of their teacher(s) name(s).

Pre-literacy/Literacy

Pre-literacy/Literacy class offers non-English speakers and low literacy foreign language speakers the opportunity to gain important skills necessary to navigate life in the United States.

Beginner

Beginner class builds on the skills the students currently have and increases their English vocabulary, pronunciation, verb tenses, and life skills.

High Beginner

High Beginner class continues to work on vocabulary, pronunciation, reading/reading comprehension, grammar, and writing skills.

Intermediate

Intermediate class works on grammar, punctuation, reading, speaking, and extensive conversation.

Class Schedule

Berkely County English language classes are offered Monday through Thursday from 6:00p.m – 7:30 p.m. at 261 Aikens Center in Martinsburg.

Jefferson County English language classes are offered Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30p.m – 7:30 p.m. at Ranson Institute of Secondary Education (RISE) 600 N. Preston Street, Ranson

Teachers encourage students to speak and write in English during classes. Teachers and students can help interpret in their native languages when necessary.

Summer activities are available one night per week on an abbreviated schedule.
